Mode 4. When you were called.

Verse: I will remember your name from generation to generation. [SAAS]

Verse: Listen, O daughter, behold and incline your ear, and forget your people and your father''s house. For the King desired your beauty. [SAAS]

Verse: The rich among the people shall entreat your favor. [SAAS]

O pure Maiden, wipe away all the sins of your suppliants, and thus reveal to all people the immensity of your mercy and the limitless ocean of your goodness. O all-blameless Lady, as the Mother of God, you have authority over creation, and by your power you make happen whatever you will. Truly the grace of the Holy Spirit, which obviously dwells in you, ever cooperates with you in everything, O all blessed one.

Καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

GREAT VESPERS

After the introductory Psalm and the first Kathisma of the Psalter, at Lord, I have cried, we use 10 verses, and we sing 7 or 6 or 4 Resurrectional Stichera, and for the Saint of the day 3 or 4 or 6 if the it is a celebrated Saint.

Resurrectional Stichera from the Octoechos. Mode 4.

Ever venerating your life giving cross, O Christ our Lord, we glorify your resurrection on the third day. By it you have restored corrupt human nature, O mighty One, and have reopened for us the upward path to heaven, for you only are a good and loving God.

Having willingly been nailed to the wood of the Cross, you abolished the penalty of disobedience committed through the tree, and by descending into Hades you [O mighty One, as God,] have broken the bonds of death. Therefore, we worship your resurrection from the dead, and, rejoicing, we cry: Almighty Lord, glory to you.

You shattered the gates of Hades, O Lord, and by your death you destroyed the dominion of death. You freed the human race from corruption, and granted the world life and incorruption, and your great mercy.

Additional Stichera by Anatolios.

Come, all you people, let us sing the praises of the Savior''s resurrection on the third day by which we have been delivered from the unbreakable bonds of Hades. Having received incorruption and life, we cry out: You who were crucified, buried, and rose save us by your resurrection, O only loving God.

Angels and men, O Savior, sing the praises of your third day rising, for it has shed light to the ends of the world. Delivered from the bondage of the enemy, we all cry out: Almighty Savior, Creator of life, save us by your resurrection, O only loving God.

You have shattered the gates of brass. You have broken asunder the chains and raised up fallen humankind, O Christ our God. Therefore, we cry with one voice: O Lord, who rose from the dead, glory to you.

Your birth from the Father is timeless and eternal, O Lord; your incarnation from the Virgin is ineffable and beyond all understanding; and your descent into Hades put fear into the devil and his angels. On the third day you rose, having trampled upon death, and granted us incorruption and your great mercy.

Καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

David the prophet, forefather of God through you, cried out in song concerning you to the One who has done magnificent things for you. The Queen stands at your right hand. For God, who gladly became man through you without a father, has proclaimed you mother and host of life, so that he might restore in us his image which was corrupted by passion. Having found the stray sheep caught in the mountains, he laid it on his shoulders and brought it to the Father. By his own free will he placed it among the heavenly hosts. Christ, who has great and abundant mercy, O Theotokos, will save the world.

At the Aposticha.

Aposticha. Mode 4.

Resurrectional.

Ascending upon the cross, O Lord, you abolished our ancestral curse; and descending into Hades, you set free those in eternal bonds. And you bestowed on humankind incorruption and life. We therefore praise and glorify your resurrection on the third day.

The Aposticha, which in Greek have the Alphabet as acrostic. By St. John of Damascus.

Verse: The Lord reigns; He clothed Himself with majesty; the Lord clothed and girded Himself with power. [SAAS]

Hanging upon the tree, O only mighty One, you shook all creation, and when you were laid in the tomb, you raised up those dwelling there and bestowed life and incorruption on our kind. Therefore, we praise and glorify your resurrection on the third day.

Verse: And He established the world, which shall not be moved. [SAAS]

The lawless people who gave you, O Christ, to Pilate condemned you to be crucified, and showed themselves thankless towards their benefactor. But you willingly suffered burial, and of your own will you arose as God on the third day, and bestowed on us everlasting life and great mercy.

Verse: Holiness is proper to Your house, O Lord, unto length of days. [SAAS]

The women who sought you came in tears to your tomb, and when they found you not, they [wept and] lamented and [crying out] exclaimed: [Alas!] Our Savior and King of all, how is it that you have been stolen away? Where is your life giving body? But an angel then stood before them and replied: Do not weep, but go and proclaim the good tidings that the Lord is risen and grants us joy for he alone is compassionate.

Καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Look down, most pure Virgin, upon the supplications of your servants, and crush the assaults of our enemies, delivering us from all affliction. You are the only sure and secure anchor that we have, and you are our protection. Never permit us who call upon you, our Lady, to be put to shame. Hasten to fulfill the entreaties of those who in faith cry to you: Rejoice, O Lady, helper of all, the joy and protection, and the salvation of our souls.

Resurrectional Apolytikion.

When the women Disciples of the Lord had learned from the Angel the joyful message of the Resurrection and rejected the ancestral decision, they cried aloud to the Apostles triumphantly: Death has been despoiled, Christ God has risen, granting His great mercy to the world.

Theotokion.

O Theotokos, through you became manifest to us on earth the mystery, which was hid from eternity, and which the Angels themselves knew not: that God, uniting natures without confusion, becomes a man and accepts crucifixion for our salvation voluntarily. By virtue of this, resurrecting man whom He had first created, He saved our souls from death.

Canon for the Trinity

By Metrophanes of Smyrna.

ᾨδὴ αʹ.

Mode 4. Ode i. N/M (The Red Sea was crossed.)

Let us glorify the Godhead, Trinity in hypostases, and single nature of the three, co-eternal, equal in majesty. We implore, saying, "Save us who with faith glorify You!"

O Son, by the Father You were anointed with the Spirit, the divine oil of gladness; and You became human, and You taught about the three hypostases of the one Godhead.

The Seraphim cannot bear to look at the beauty of your unapproachable glory, O tri-solar Monad. They cover themselves with their wings, and they glorify You unceasingly in thrice-holy songs.

Theotokion.

O all-pure Virgin, you have given birth ineffably to the Maker of the universe. He delivers humanity from the primeval curse and the decay of death. Through you we have come to know the one God in three hypostases.

ᾨδὴ γʹ.

Ode iii. N/M (Not in our wisdom.)

O Christ, once You sent to Your holy Apostles power from on high, namely the Paraclete from the Father, You exhibited the one tri-solar divine nature.

O threefold Monad, when You appeared in human form to the Patriarch Abraham, You revealed that the three persons are exactly the same in Your goodness and Your dominion.

We entreat You, O God, whom we believe to be one nature in three persons, truly uncircumscribed, incomprehensible to all: Rescue our souls from every affliction.

Theotokion.

Grounded in the wise teachings of your Son, we glorify the single, thrice-radiant Godhead; and we call you blessed, O ever-virgin Mary.

O tri-solar, uncreated, consubstantial one God, * incomprehensible, in three hypostases, * Your servants implore You now. * Pity us and save us * from disaster and danger. * Merciful God, for us You are our only Lord and Savior, * O Master, and we pray to You: Have mercy on us.

O Virgin, your servants frequently succumb to despair, * because of the many tragedies, disasters, and woes * besetting us every day. * All-holy Theotokos, we rely on you solely * for hope and protection and salvation, O Lady. * And therefore with faith we properly pray you to rescue us.

ᾨδὴ δʹ.

Ode iv. N/M (He who sits in holy glory.)

We join the Seraphim and glorify You, O incomprehensible God, superessential Dominion and Trinity in unity of Godhead, undivided nature, without confusion, exactly equal in glory.

We extol You, only Godhead, ineffably divided in persons and identical in one dominion, infinite, uncircumscribed, the Maker of creation all.

The unoriginate Nous ineffably begot the Logos and sent out the divine Spirit who is equal in might. Therefore we profess that the God and Master of all is a consubstantial Trinity.

Theotokion.

O Virgin, the Logos appeared to men of old in types and foretold His incarnation from you. Later He appeared to men in reality, and He revealed the one Principle in three hypostases.

ᾨδὴ εʹ.

Ode v. N/M (Amazed was the universe.)

From our faith, we are able to understand that there is one unapproachable essence and three consubstantial life-giving hypostases of the omnipotent Godhead; and we worship Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the co-eternal existence.

O single Godhead, uncreated nature, illuminating source of every light-giving beam, shine in me the tri-solar light of Your essential splendor, so that I may see the reflection of Your ineffable beauty.

We know that You are the only all-wise Creator, Sustainer, and Governor of the universe, and the Giver of life. We cry out to You in faith: O tri-solar Master, guard us who sing Your praise.

O Virgin, in His goodness your Son made man in the divine image. When humanity had been corrupted, He wished to deify it. He became man from you, and He proclaimed that there is one Godhead in three persons.

At the baptism of Christ, the Father called Him Son, and the Spirit appeared to Him. Therefore we glorify one Godhead in three hypostases. (2)

When Isaiah saw You seated on an exalted throne and being praised with thrice-holy hymns, he came to know the one Godhead in three hypostases.

O exalted King in three hypostases, lift the hearts of your servants, so that we may luminously contemplate the splendor of Your glory.

The being of mortals was cleansed when through you it encountered the unendurable divine fire; like a hidden loaf it was baked in you, all-pure Virgin, by that fire who kept you unharmed.

Who is this who is truly God''s neighbour, for she is higher than all the ranks of Angels? She who alone in the beauty of virginity shines as the Mother of the Almighty.

Foolish Hell received you entire in its mouth, for as it had watched you nailed to a Tree, pierced by a lance it reckoned the lifeless living God to be a mere mortal; but when put to the test he knew the strength of your Divinity.

Having fashioned you from Adam''s side, he was incarnate from your virginity, the Lord of all, whom we praise as we cry out: All you his works, bless the Lord.

In a tent Abraham beheld the mystery which is in you, Mother of God, for he received your Son, not in the flesh, and sang: All you his works, bless, praise the Lord.

The pattern of your virginity saved those equal in number to the Trinity; for in virgin bodies they trampled down the flame, O Maiden, as they cried: Bless, praise the Lord.

A cornerstone was cut out without hands from a never-quarried mountain, * which prefigured you, holy Virgin. * The stone is Christ, who joined the disparate natures. * As we rejoice because of this, O Theotokos, we magnify you. [SD]

You assumed the whole of me wholly in a union without confusion; * and when You had worked my salvation, * bodily bearing Your Passion and the Cross, * You gave it to the whole of me, * because of Your immense compassion, as God.

When they saw Your sepulcher opened and the linen cloths that had covered * Your divine body, Your Disciples * became aware of Your resurrection, O Christ, * they cried out as the Angel had, * "The Lord has truly risen from the dead!"

All we the believers now worship God, one in nature and in essence, * but three in hypostases and persons * unconfused, and equal in might and honor. * With Orthodox theology, we magnify the Holy Trinity.

The serpent in Eden crept with guile and took me prisoner; but the almighty Lord dashed him against the mighty rock of Calvary, like an infant, and though the Tree of the Cross opened up for me again the entrance of delight.

You laid waste the mighty strongholds of the foe and plundered his wealth with your all powerful hand, raising me with you from the vaults of Hell, and exposed the ancient vaunting boaster as a mere jest and laughing stock.

Come to visit the misery of your people in their penury; with your compassionate and mighty hand give power to the Sovereign who bears the Cross against blaspheming foes to rescue your own inheritance, O Christ, as you love mankind.

We see you as a lily dyed with the purple of the divine Spirit, immaculate Virgin, shining out in the midst of thorns and filling with sweet fragrance those who truly magnify you.

From your womb, O all-blameless, the Incorruptible took our unstable mortal nature and through his compassion revealed it as stable in himself; and so as Mother of God we magnify you.

Resurrectional Stichera. Mode 4.

You endured crucifixion and death, O Lord, and resurrected from the dead. O Almighty One, we glorify Your resurrection.

O Christ, by means of Your Cross, You have set us free from the ancient curse; and by means of Your death, You have neutralized the devil who tyrannized our nature; and by Your rising, You filled all things with joy. Therefore we shout to You, who rose from the dead, "Glory to You, O Lord."

By means of Your Cross, O Lord, direct us to Your truth, O Christ our Savior; and deliver us from the snares of the foe. You who rose from the dead, raise us who are fallen because of sin, extending Your hand, O Lord who loves humanity, at the intercession of Your holy ones.

Only-begotten Logos of God, while departing not from the Father''s bosom, You came to earth for love of humanity, immutably becoming human; and You physically endured the Cross and death, although impassible in divinity. Having risen from the dead, You granted the human race immortality, as the only almighty One.

You accepted physical death, and thus transacted immortality for us, O Savior. And You dwelt in a tomb, so that You might liberate us from Hades. You resurrected us with yourself. You suffered as a man, but resurrected as God. We therefore cry aloud, "Glory to You, O Lord and Giver of Life, who alone loves humanity."

Savior, the rocks were split when Your cross was set up on Calvary. The keepers of the gates of Hades shuddered when You were laid in the grave as one mortal. And once You had neutralized the power of death, by Your resurrection, O Savior, You granted incorruption to all who had died. O Life-giver, glory to You, O Lord.

The women longed to see Your resurrection, O Christ God. Mary Magdalene came before the others. She found that the stone had been rolled away from the sepulcher, and saw the Angel sitting there, and he said to them, "Why do you seek among the dead the One who is alive? He has risen, as God, in order to save the universe."

So where is He, Jesus, whom you thought you were guarding? Pray tell, O Judeans! Where is He whom you put in the grave, sealing the stone? Give back the dead man, you who rejected life; give back the one who was buried, or believe in Him resurrected. Even if you try to suppress the Lord''s resurrection, the stones themselves will cry aloud, and especially the one that was rolled back from the sepulcher. Great is Your mercy! Great is the mystery of Your Economy! O our Savior, glory to You.

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate was Hades taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned back; the curse has been neutralized, and Eve has been liberated; death has been put to death, and we have been brought to life. Therefore extolling we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You!

Then, the Great Doxology; and after that, the following Troparion:

Today has salvation come to pass in the world. Let us sing to Him who resurrected from the tomb and is the Author of our life. For, destroying death by death, He gave us the victory and the great mercy.

Adam fell by a tree, and he was evicted from Paradise. * By the tree of the Cross the Robber gained entrance to Paradise. * The former, by tasting fruit, disobeyed his Maker''s commandment not to eat. * The latter was crucified with Him, whom though hidden he confessed to be God. * Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior.

You were lifted on the Cross and destroyed the power of death on us, * and You set aside the bond which stood against us and, as God, cancelled it. * Grant that we may also have the Robber''s repentance, O only Friend of man. * We faithfully worship You, O Christ our God, and we cry aloud to You, * "Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior."

You have set aside the bond which stood against us, shredding it by Your Cross. * When You were numbered with the dead, You disarmed and bound the tyrant ruling there, * delivering everyone from the bonds of death by Your resurrection; * through which we were illumined. And we cry out to You, O Lord who love humanity, * "Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior."

You were crucified and rose * from the grave on the third day, O mighty One, * and resurrected with yourself * the first-formed man, Adam, O immortal One. * Now I pray You earnestly, Grant me to return to You, Master, in sincere * repentance wholeheartedly, * and to ever cry out to You in ardent faith: * Remember me as well in Your kingdom, O Savior.

For us impassible God * became man and thus became passible. * He was crucified for us * of His own will, and He raised us with himself. * And therefore we glorify His Passion, the Cross and His rising from the dead. * Through these we were formed again; * through these we are saved, as we cry aloud to Him: * "Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior."

To Him who rose from the dead, * having despoiled Hades'' dominion, * and who appeared and said, "Rejoice," * to the myrrh-bearing women; to Christ our God * let us the believers pray, * asking Him to rescue our souls from corruption. * And let us unceasingly * shout to Him the words that the grateful Robber said: * "Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior."

All believers, let us pray that we be of one mind and worthily * sing praises glorifying God, Father, Son, and Spirit, the Trinity, * united divinity, which exists forever in three hypostases, * remaining unconfused, simple, indivisible, unapproachable, * by whom we are delivered from the fire of perdition.
