Virgin, noble and all-pure, * Isaiah saw it beforehand, * for his mind was purified; * and he prophesied that you * would conceive and bear * the Creator of the world. * Only you are blameless * of all women from eternity. * Therefore I pray to you: * Purify my heart, which has been defiled. * And grant that I may once again * enjoy the divine and celestial light * of your Son, O Maiden, * and grant to me a place at His right hand * when, as is written, He sits to judge * all the world on Judgment Day.

Verse: The rich among the people shall entreat your favor. [SAAS]

GREAT VESPERS

After the introductory Psalm and the first Kathisma of the Psalter, at Lord, I have cried, we use 10 verses, and we sing 7 or 6 or 4 Resurrectional Stichera, and for the Saint of the day 3 or 4 or 6 if the it is a celebrated Saint.

βʹ.

Resurrectional Stichera from the Octoechos. Mode pl. 2.

Triumphant over Hades, O Christ, you ascended upon the cross to raise up with yourself those dwelling in the darkness of death. Free from among the dead, you pour forth life from your own light. Almighty Savior, have mercy on us.

Today, Christ, having trampled upon death, according to his word, rose up bestowing joy upon the world, so that all of us shouting this hymn might say: O Fount of life, light that no person may approach, O almighty Savior, have mercy on us.

Where shall we sinners fly from you, O Lord, who are everywhere in creation? Into heaven? Your abode is there. Into hell? You have trampled upon death. Into the uttermost parts of the sea? Your hand reaches there, O Master. We run to you and falling before you we pray: You, who rose from the dead, have mercy on us.

Additional Stichera by Anatolios.

We exult in your cross, O Christ, and we praise and glorify your resurrection. You are indeed our God; we know no other Lord but you.

Ever blessing the Lord, we praise his resurrection. For by enduring the cross, he destroyed death by death.

Glory be to your might, O Lord, for you have destroyed the power of death, and you have renewed us through your cross, bestowing on us life and incorruption.

Your burial, O Christ, burst asunder the bonds of Hades; your resurrection from the dead gave light to the world. To you, O Lord, be glory.

Καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Who will not call you blessed, most holy Virgin? Who will not sing praises of your wondrous birth giving? For the only-begotten Son, timelessly having shone forth from the Father, came forth from you who are pure. And having been ineffably made flesh, he, who by nature is God, for our sake became also by nature man: not in two divided persons, but in two natures without confusion. O honored and all blessed one, beseech him to have mercy on our souls.

At the Aposticha.

Verse: The Lord reigns; He clothed Himself with majesty; the Lord clothed and girded Himself with power. [SAAS]

After smashing the gates of brass and breaking the bolts and bars of Hades, you, almighty God, raised up fallen mankind. Therefore, with one accord, we cry: O Lord, risen from the dead, Glory to you.

Verse: And He established the world, which shall not be moved. [SAAS]

Wishing to lift us out of the ancient corruption, Christ was nailed upon the cross and laid in the tomb. In tears the women bearing myrrh searched for him and said lamenting: Woe to us! O Savior of all, how did you consent to stay in a tomb? And as you stayed there willingly, how were you stolen? How were you moved? What place now hides your life giving body? O Master, appear to us as you have promised, and dry up the fountain of our tears. Thereupon as they wept, an angel came to them and cried: Cease your weeping and tell the apostles that the Lord is risen, granting the world forgiveness and great mercy.

Verse: Holiness is proper to Your house, O Lord, unto length of days. [SAAS]

Crucified according to your will and despoiling death by your entombment, O Christ, you rose in glory on the third day as God, granting the world life everlasting and great mercy.

Καὶ νῦν.

Glory. Both now. Theotokion.

Most holy Virgin, Christ the Lord, Creator and Redeemer, proceeded from your womb, and clothing himself in me, set me free from the ancient curse on Adam. Therefore, most pure Virgin, we praise you without ceasing as Mother of God and true Virgin with the greeting of the angel: Rejoice! Lady, advocate, defender, and salvation of our souls.

Resurrectional Apolytikion.

When the angelic powers appeared at Your grave, the soldiers guarding it feared and became as dead. And standing by the sepulcher was Mary who was seeking Your immaculate body. You devastated Hades, not afflicted by it. You went to meet the virgin, and granted eternal life. You resurrected from the dead. O Lord, glory to You.

Theotokion.

O Lord, who called the blessed Maid Your Mother, You came to the Passion of Your own will and intent. Adam You wished to seek; You therefore shone upon the Cross, saying to the Angels, "Rejoice with me together, for I have found the coin that was lost." O Lord, You have disposed all things wisely. Glory to You.

Mode pl. 2. Ode i. N/M (When they had walked.)

We extol three divine hypostases of single nature, identical essence, our good and humane God, who grants us forgiveness of offenses.

Only Lord, superessential, thrice-radiant in persons and one Godhead, give us understanding, and count us worthy of Your divine illumination.

Paul, who was like the bridal escort of the Church of the Gentiles, taught her to worship You, one God in three hypostases, from whom and through whom and in whom all things came to be.

Theotokion.

O Theotokos, the spiritual Sun came forth from your womb, and He shined on us with rays of the thrice-radiant Godhead. We devoutly extol Him, and we call you blessed.

ᾨδὴ γʹ.

Ode iii. N/M (No one is holy.)

O thrice-radiant God, You ordered the heavenly Ranks, and You equipped them to sing thrice-holy hymns. We pray You accept us when we sing with them the praises of Your goodness.

As we extol the only immutable, triple, consubstantial, single Godhead, we earnestly entreat You to send down to us forgiveness of our many sins.

O Father, the unoriginate Nous, O consubstantial Logos of God, O good and right Holy Spirit, guard all who faithfully extol Your dominion, O compassionate Lord.

O pure Virgin, my God became man by nature in your womb. He arrested the spread of corruption, and He alone freed our first ancestors from the ancient guilty verdict.

βʹ.

Kathisma. Mode pl. 2. When You had fulfilled.

Master, Lord and God, we entreat, look down from heaven, * and behold our lowliness, in Your great compassion; * and have mercy, O all-good One, in Your love for man. * There is no one else from whom we hope * to obtain the forgiveness of * all the sins we are guilty of. * So please be with us, O God, and against us is none.

Lady, good and pure, we entreat, look down from heaven, * and behold our many wounds and the pain we suffer; * and have mercy, holy Virgin all-immaculate. * Cure the searing of our consciences * with your mercy like refreshing dew. * We your servants long to hear you say * that you are with us, and thus against us there is none.

ᾨδὴ δʹ.

Ode iv. N/M (The holy Church of God.)

O thrice-radiant Unity, we implore You exalt our minds, and uplift the souls and hearts of those who extol You, and count us worthy of Your illumination and splendor.

O only undepictable and unchanging Trinity, transform me and transfigure me from every vice to virtue, and make me resplendent with Your radiance.

O Unity in three hypostases, You first conceived of them and then with wisdom gave existence to the ministering ranks of the Angels. Accept me as I join them praising of Your benevolence.

O ever-virgin Theotokos, it was in your womb that the connaturally uncreated and eternal God assumed created human nature and refashioned it.

ᾨδὴ εʹ.

Ode v. N/M (With Your divine light.)

O Master, as we consider the divine nature, that it is providential and able to preserve and save all things, and thrice-radiant and one, we rise early in the morning to You, praying that You forgive our sins.

O unoriginate Father and God, and co-eternal Son, and Holy Spirit, the monarchical Trinity, we pray You strengthen us who sing Your praise, and deliver us from all abuse and affliction.

O immutable Logos of God, You hold and preserve all things with your almighty hand. Guard and preserve us who are glorifying You, at the intercession of the Mother of God who gave birth to You.

O undivided Light, in essence thrice-radiant, almighty, and unapproachable: shine in the hearts of those who faithfully praise Your dominion, and launch them towards Your divine love.

O Unity thrice-radiant in hypostases, grant me a strong mind, that I may keep and obey Your divine commandments, and that I may always sing to You with faith: Blessed are You, the God of our fathers.

You are extolled as identical in nature, God ineffably single, and in persons having the number of the Trinity. Preserve us, one and all, from various temptations and calamities.

O Trinity, You present the difference in hypostatic properties simply and without confusion, clearly unchanging in nature. We glorify You, one God in essence, consubstantial, and co-eternal.

I implore You grant me forgiveness of offenses, and free me from the various passions, O consubstantial Trinity and Unity in three hypostases, that I may glorify You unto all the ages.

It is said You delight in mercy, O merciful God. O thrice-radiant Unity and consubstantial Trinity, have mercy on all who glorify your majesty.

O Master, the ranks of Cherubim, are unable to gaze at the glory of Your beauty. So they cover themselves with their wings and unceasingly sing the thrice-holy hymn, and they glorify Your single Godhead''s dominion in three hypostases.

O never-setting Sun, only all-merciful God in three hypostases, grant Your radiance to the hearts of Your servants. Illumine our souls, and free us from many offenses, and count us worthy of Your immortal life.

O Godhead, coequal, tri-solar, and light-giving light, illumine those who sing of You with faith, and deliver them from dark misdeeds. Count them worthy of Your luminous mansions, O God supremely good.

O all-lauded Virgin, your Son fashioned humanity of old with wisdom, and when it was corrupted He refashioned it through you. And with the never-setting brightness of the divine light, He filled all who glorify you evermore as the true Theotokos.

The holy Church of God exclaims befittingly, * "Christ is God and my Lord, and He is my strength." * She is celebrating in the Lord and sings to Him * from a mind that has been purified. [SD]

The tree of true eternal life has blossomed, O Christ. * For on Calvary planted, Your precious Cross * was watered by blood and water spilling from Your holy side; * it produced the fruit of life for us.

Since Christ, who fashioned human nature, being God, * has removed all obstructions and opened wide * the path to life for me, the serpent whispers no more to me * false suggestions of becoming a god.

Incomprehensible, indeed ineffable, * for all people on earth and the hosts on high, * are the divine mysteries, O Virgin Mother of God, * of your marvelous conception of God.

Foreseeing your divine. (NM)

We honour your precious Cross, O Christ, the nails and the holy lance, with the reed and the crown of thorns. Through them we have been delivered from the corruption of Hades.

A tomb received you, seen willingly a corpse for us, but in no way could it hold you fast, for as God you arose and saved our race.

Ever-virgin God''s conceiver, who for mortals gave birth to Christ the Saviour, deliver from dangers and punishments those who with divine faith take refuge in your protection.

All-pure, we who have been saved through you, the All-unblemished, and who devoutly sing your praise, cry out, ''Blessed are you, Ever-Virgin, who bore God!''

All-blessed Virgin, you gave birth to the inaccessible light that, appearing through flesh, shines for those in the darkness of life, and for those who sing your praise, Ever-Virgin, you are a source of joy.

Grace has flowered, the law has ceased, through you, All-holy, for you gave birth, pure Ever-Virgin, to the Lord, who grants us forgiveness.

Tasting of a plant declared me to be a corpse, but the tree of life which appeared from you, All-pure, raised me up and established me as heir to the delight of Paradise.

Deceived by the food from the tree, disobeying your command, O Lord, supremely good, our Ancestor sank down into corruption; but through the Cross you brought him up again to his former beauty, O Saviour, when you were obedient to the Father.

By your death, O Good One, death''s might disappeared, a source of life gushed up for us and we were given immortality. And so with faith we worship your Burial and your Resurrection, through which, as God, you enlightened all things.

The Lord who dwells in heaven and the maker of all things dwelt ineffably in your womb, O All-unblemished, glorifying you as higher than the heavens and holier than the Ranks of immaterial powers. Therefore we on earth now call you blessed.

Shining radiantly with purity you became a divine dwelling for the Master, for you alone were declared to be truly Mother of God, as you carried him as an infant in your arms.

Wearing the spiritual beauty of the loveliness your soul, you bore the title Bride of God, sealed by virginity as holy, and flooding the world with the light of your purity.

You were confined. (NM)

The multitude of Hebrews killed Christ and the Prophets, for as it was not afraid of old to kill Prophets, rays of truth, so now, like those of old, overcome by envy they killed the Lord, whom the Prophets once proclaimed; but for us his death has become our life.

You were confined but not held fast by a grave, O Saviour, for though you willingly tasted death, O Word, but as immortal God you arose, raising the prisoners in Hades with you and giving the women joy in place of their former grief.

''The form of your flesh appeared dishonoured and deceased to mortals at the time of your Passion, although by the nature of your Godhead you revealed to David that you are fair in your beauty; but with the rod of your Kingship you smash the strength of your enemies'', said the Pure Virgin, ''my Son and my God, and arise''.

Moses, great among the Prophets, described you as Ark, Table, Lampstand and Jar, symbolically depicting the incarnation from you of the Most High, O Virgin Mother.

Death, Adam''s condemnation, becomes a corpse, corruption too is abolished, when it attacks your fruit, Sovereign Lady, for you gave to birth to Life that ransoms from corruption those who sing your praise.

When the Life-bestower Christ God had resurrected with His vivifying hand, from the dismal caverns, all the dead from eternity, He freely bestowed resurrection on the substance of our mortal humanity. For He is the Savior of all, resurrection and life, and the God of all things.

Your cross and tomb, O Life-giver, we believers worship and sing praise, for Hell, O You who live forever, as almighty God You have belayed. The gates of Hell You tore to shreds, and as God, the might of death have razed. So, avidly we earthborn praise in doxology the One now raised, who destroyed the deadly power of our foe. You have resurrected everyone -- all those who believe in You; You have rescued the world from the serpent''s fangs, and have snatched us from allure to the hostile one -- as alone You had ability to do. Hence we piously sing the praises of Your rising, by which You saved us, as the God of all things.

How great, O Christ, is your ineffable love for humankind; how great your inexpressible blessings! For when you saw me perishing in Hades'' prison you underwent your Passion and delivered me, and we bless you, Master of all things, and highly exalt you to all the ages.

Your Son adorned you with a shining garment woven with gold as a Queen with the radiance of the Spirit and placed you at his right hand, O All-pure. We highly exalt him to all the ages.

The One who fixed the world by his will alone borrowed his flesh from your immaculate womb, wishing to refashion it from on high. We highly exalt him to all the ages.

You became a divine dwelling of the connection of the Word to me, humanity, pure Virgin, who shine out with the radiance of virginity. Therefore we sing your praise to all the ages.

The golden lampstand prefigured you who received the unapproachable Light that illumines the universe with his knowledge. Therefore we sing your praise, pure Virgin, to the ages.

It is impossible for God to be seen * by people; and angelic orders dare not to look at Him. * But the Word incarnate has been seen by mankind, through you, O all-pure Virgin. * Now magnifying Him, * joining the celestial hosts, all generations call you blest. [SD]

O Word of God, You did not participate * in sinful passions when You met the passions, becoming flesh. * But You free from passions all humanity, Savior, for at Your Passion * You had become for us * sin and passion, only Lord almighty and impassible.

Though you descended into a tomb as mortal, O Giver of life, yet you destroyed the strength of Hades, O Christ, and with you raised the dead that it had swallowed; and as God you grant resurrection to all who magnify you with faith and love.

Let creation rejoice and flower like a lily, for Christ has been raised from the dead as God. ''Where now death is your sting?'' we cry. ''Where Hades your victory?'' The One who exalts our horn as compassionate has utterly destroyed you.

You carry the One who carries all things, and you clasp in your hands as an infant the One who delivers us from the hand of the warlike foe, immaculate Sovereign Lady; and you see lifted up on the tree of the Cross the One who lifted us up from the pit of wickedness.

It is impossible. (NM)

A star, shining out with rays of divinity, has now dawned from Jacob for those held fast by deep darkness, through you, All-pure, Christ God, Word incarnate, enlightened by whom, along with the heavenly hosts, we call you blessed.

Strengthened by your power and grace, fervently I offer you from the heart this song. But accept it, pure Virgin, giving me in return grace with many lights from your undefiled treasures.

You were declared to be the womb of the Godhead, on which the Word wove the robs of his body, making my form divine, O Virgin; putting it on he saved all those who from a pure mind magnify you.

Now resurrection has been granted to the dead through your ineffable and inexpressible conceiving, all-pure Mother of God; for life clothed in flesh has shone out from you for all, and has destroyed the gloom of death.

Lord, Your Cross is life and resurrection for us Your people; and trusting in it we extol You, our God, who has risen. Have mercy on us.

Sovereign Lord, Your burial has opened Paradise to the human race; and now, redeemed from corruption, we extol You, our God, who has risen. Have mercy on us.

As to the Father and the Spirit, so to Christ who rose from the dead let us sing our hymns of praise; and to Him let us cry out, "You are our life and resurrection. Have mercy on us."

Additional Stichera by Anatolios.

O Lord, the mystery of Your resurrection is great and awesome; for You emerged from the sepulcher as a bridegroom from the bridal chamber, having destroyed death by death, in order to free Adam. Therefore the Angels in the heavens sing in chorus, and on earth human beings glorify Your compassion toward us, O Lover of humanity.

O iniquitous Judeans, where are the seals, and where is the money that you gave to the soldiers? The treasure was not stolen, but He rose, the Mighty one. You yourselves were put to shame for renouncing Christ the Lord of glory, who suffered and was buried and resurrected from the dead. Let us worship Him.

With the tomb being sealed shut, how were you robbed, O Judeans? After all, you posted guards and affixed the seals. And yet while the doors were shut, the King emerged. Either produce Him as dead, or adore Him as God, with us together singing, "Glory to Your Cross, O Lord, and Your Resurrection."

The myrrh-bearing women arrived at Your life-bearing tomb lamenting, O Lord. They carried ointments with them, intending to anoint Your immaculate body. But what they found was a radiant Angel sitting on the stone, who spoke to them, saying, "Why do you weep for Him, who from His side gushed forth life for the world? Why do you seek the Immortal, as if He were a mortal in a tomb? Rather, run quickly and announce the universal joy of His glorious resurrection to His Disciples." By Your rising, illumine us, O Savior, and grant us expiation and great mercy.

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate was Hades taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned back; the curse has been neutralized, and Eve has been liberated; death has been put to death, and we have been brought to life. Therefore extolling we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You!

Today has salvation come to pass in the world. Let us sing to Him who resurrected from the tomb and is the Author of our life. For, destroying death by death, He gave us the victory and the great mercy.

When You rose from the sepulcher and broke the bonds of Hades, You repealed the sentence of death, O Lord, and delivered all from the snares of the enemy. And when You showed yourself to Your Apostles, You sent them out to preach, and through them You granted peace to the whole world, O only very merciful One.
