GREAT VESPERS |
After the introductory Psalm and the first Kathisma of the Psalter, at Lord, I have cried, we use 10 verses, and we sing 7 or 6 or 4 Resurrectional Stichera, and for the Saint of the day 3 or 4 or 6 if the it is a celebrated Saint. |
Resurrectional Stichera from the Octoechos. Grave Mode. |
|
|
Come, let us rejoice in the Lord who destroyed the power of death and enlightened mankind; and let us cry along with the angels: Glory to you, our Creator and our Savior. |
|
|
On our account, O Savior, you endured the cross and the tomb. As God you put death to death by death. Therefore, we worship your resurrection on the third day. Glory to you, O Lord. |
|
|
On beholding the resurrection of the Creator, the apostles, marveling, sang an angelic song of praise: This is the glory of the Church. These are the riches of the kingdom. Glory be to you, O Lord, who suffered death for us. |
Additional Stichera by Anatolios. |
|
|
Though you, O Christ, have been taken captive by evil men, you are my God and I am not ashamed. I do not deny that your back was scourged, nor will I hide that you were nailed to the cross. I boast of your resurrection, for your death is my life. Almighty and loving God, glory to you. |
|
|
Fulfilling the prophecy of David, Christ revealed to his disciples the majesty of his habitation in Zion. He showed himself praised and glorified forever with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Formerly, as the Word without flesh, and then incarnate for our sake and slain as man he rose in power as a loving God. |
|
|
As God and Master, O Christ, by your will you descended into Hades despoiling death; and on the third day you rose, raising with you Adam, held captive by the chains of hell and of corruption, who cried and said: Glory be to your resurrection, O only loving God. |
|
|
You were laid in the tomb as if asleep, O Lord, and after three days you rose in mighty strength, raising up with you, as almighty, Adam from the corruption of death. |
Καὶ νῦν. |
Glory. Both now. Theotokion. |

You were known to be a mother passing nature, O Theotokos, and still you remained a Virgin, in a way passing speech and thought. And no language is capable of explaining the wonder of your childbirth. O pure Maid, your conception was paradoxical, hence the manner of your pregnancy is also incomprehensible. For whenever God so wills, nature''s order is overridden. Therefore, acknowledging you as the Mother of God, to you we all intently pray: Intercede for the salvation of our souls. |

Verse: The Lord reigns; He clothed Himself with majesty; the Lord clothed and girded Himself with power. [SAAS] |
|
|
Come, let us worship him, who rose from the dead and enlightened all. For by his resurrection on the third day he set us free from the tyranny of Hades, granting us life and great mercy. |
Verse: And He established the world, which shall not be moved. [SAAS] |
|
|
You have descended into Hades, O Christ, despoiling death. Rising on the third day, you have also raised us up, and we glorify your almighty resurrection, O Lord and loving God. |
Verse: Holiness is proper to Your house, O Lord, unto length of days. [SAAS] |
|
|
O Lord, what an awful sight it was to see you lying as if asleep in the tomb. Yet you rose on the third day in power also raising Adam who cried: Glory to your resurrection, O only loving God. |
Καὶ νῦν. |
Glory. Both now. Theotokion. |
All of us who dwell on earth, taking refuge under your protection, O Lady, cry aloud to you: O Theotokos, you are our hope. Deliver us from our countless sins and save us. |
Resurrectional Apolytikion. |

By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished death. To the robber You opened Paradise. The lamentation of the myrrh-bearing women You transformed, and You gave Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all that You had risen, O Christ our God, and granted the world Your great mercy. |
Theotokion. |
|
|
O all-praised Lady, our resurrection''s treasury, do from the pit and the deep of offences draw us up, as we have put our trust in you. For you have saved us who were liable for sin, by giving birth unto our salvation. Virgin prior to bearing; and in bearing, a Virgin; and after bearing, still a Virgin. |

O Logos of God, You appeared to Moses in the bush as a purifying fire that did at all consume it. You thus prefigured Your incarnation from the Virgin, through which you refashioned humanity. |

O unoriginate triple and single Lordship, You rule the universe, and You steer heaven and earth. I pray You preserve me, who am mesmerized by Your love, to sing to You, "All you works of the Lord, sing a hymn to the Lord, and exalt Him beyond measure unto all the ages." (2) |

O Source of good and Lover of humanity, make me be a temple of Your thrice-radiant light, communion, and participation. O Master, make me be untouchable by unseen enemies and by the carnal passions, my only King and God, the Lord of glory, so that I may sing Your praise, unto all the ages. |

O immaculate Virgin and Mother, divine Light rose from your womb, and He illumined the entire world with tri-solar light. He made the earth to be like another heaven that sings, "All you works of the Lord, sing a hymn to the Lord, and exalt Him beyond measure unto all the ages." |

O Theotokos, God the Logos assumed a mind and soul and the substance of our flesh, and He truly came forth from your immaculate womb and was seen as a man. He showed how humanity may indeed become a partaker of divine nature. |

By the splendour of your child-bearing, Mother of God, you have marvellously enlightened the inhabited world. For you carry in your arms the true God, who makes radiant the faithful who ever cry, ''All you works of the Lord, praise the Lord, and highly exalt him to all the ages''. |
|

Pure Virgin, we devoutly sing the praise of your womb which contained God, incarnate beyond explanation, who gives the enlightenment of the knowledge of God to all the faithful who ever cry, ''All you works of the Lord, praise the Lord, and highly exalt him to all the ages''. |

With the bright rays of your light you make light those who sing your praise, pure Mother of God, parent of the light; for you appeared as tabernacle of light, making radiant with light those who ever cry, ''All you works of the Lord, praise the Lord, and highly exalt him to all the ages''. |

When you conceived, you experienced no deflowerment. * You lent your flesh to the Logos, through whom all things were made. * Therefore we magnify you, Virgin Theotokos, * Mother who knew no man, space and holder of your Maker, who is uncontainable and infinite. [SD] |

All you professors of doctrines that are not Orthodox, * who to the Godhead attribute suffering, shut your mouths! * He is the Lord of glory, crucified in body, * but not in divine nature. And so we magnify Him in natures two, the one hypostasis. |
|
|
Go to the tomb of the Savior, all you who would reject * the resurrection of bodies, and be instructed there. * See that the flesh of Christ the Life-giver, which truly had died, has truly risen, * confirming thus the final resurrection, for which we surely hope. |

Not in a Triad of godheads but of hypostases, * not in a Monad of persons but of Divinity, do we believe. * We cut off those who would divide It, * and mix together all who would attribute confusion to the Trinity, which we magnify. |

Christ as the light that from light shone timelessly * and as the radiance of His Father’s glory, illumined * the darkness of the life of humankind. * And He dispelled the pursuing darkness. * And Him do we believers all unceasingly magnify. |

Seeing in Christ both the flesh’s sufferings * and the Divinity’s might, let those affirming the doctrine * of the one compound nature be ashamed. * For the same Person both died as a human being, * and as Maker of the universe rose again. |

What shall we give to the Lord in return for all that He has rendered to us? For us did God come among men. For our corrupted nature did the Logos become flesh and dwell among us. The Benefactor came to the ungrateful; the Liberator to the captives; the Sun of Righteousness to those who sit in darkness. He who is dispassionate suffered on the cross; the Light shone in Hell. He who is Life has trampled on death. For the fallen He is the resurrection. Let us cry out to Him, Glory to You our God. |

O Lord, You have shattered the gates of Hell, and You have put an end to death''s dominion, all by Your own mighty power. And You raised up with yourself the dead who lay in darkness from when time began, by Your divine and glorious resurrection, as the King over all and as God omnipotent. |

Come, let us rejoice in the Lord and be exultant in His resurrection; for with himself He raised the dead from the bonds of Hades that no one could break; and as God, He has given to the world everlasting life and His great mercy. |

The dazzling Angel was sitting upon the stone of the life-receiving sepulcher, and to the myrrh-bearing women he proclaimed the good tidings, "The Lord has risen, as He foretold to you. Go announce it to His disciples that He is going before you into Galilee; and that to the world He is granting life eternal and His great mercy." |

Why did you reject the Cornerstone, O law-breaking Judeans? This is the stone that God placed in Zion, the One who made water spring from the rock in the desert, and who now for us from His side pours out immortality. This is the stone that was cut from the Virgin Mountain without a husband''s will. He is the Son of man who is coming on the clouds of heaven to the Ancient of days, as Daniel has said, and His reign is everlasting. |

You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos. For through Him who from you became incarnate was Hades taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned back; the curse has been neutralized, and Eve has been liberated; death has been put to death, and we have been brought to life. Therefore extolling we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You! |

When You rose from the sepulcher and broke the bonds of Hades, You repealed the sentence of death, O Lord, and delivered all from the snares of the enemy. And when You showed yourself to Your Apostles, You sent them out to preach, and through them You granted peace to the whole world, O only very merciful One. |
